Derbyshire is a county in the very heart of England within easy reach of
many of the country's largest cities. It contains one of England's most
spectacular areas of natural scenery in the Peak District - a National
Park that covers 555 square miles of Derbyshire. The Derbyshire
countryside has wild and lonely hills in the north and gentle limestone
dales in the south. Many visitors come to Derbyshire for sport and recreation and Derbyshire's Peak District has some of the world's hardest rock climbs on its limestone crags. The county also has some of the best showcaves in England like Poole's Cavern near beautiful Buxton - once famous for its spa (Buxton water). For a more leisurely pursuit try angling for trout in the county's fast-running streams. Derbyshire boasts some of England's greatest Stately Homes and Gardens. Many of them are open to the public to allow visitors to view centuries of history and the collections of some of England's wealthiest families. Famous Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are both close to Bakewell - the 'capital' of the Peak District - near the centre of Derbyshire. Other historic houses of interest to the tourist in Derbyshire are Eyam Hall, Revolution House, Hardwick Hall, Melbourne Hall and Renishaw Hall. A popular walking spot is Dovedale. There are several parks for a relaxing day out or for a more lively day out, take the kids to one of the several theme parks in the area like the American Adventure or Gulliver's Kingdom.
