Devon is an English county of outstanding natural beauty. Its lovely
beaches and mild climate make it the ideal destination for traditional
seaside holidays. Inland, narrow country lanes meander through the lush
green countryside to idyllic villages of thatched cottages. Devon’s
history is inextricably bound up with the sea. In 1588 Francis Drake
interrupted his bowls fixture in Plymouth to put to fight off the Spanish
Armada. The Barbican Plymouths historic old quay, with its Tudor and
Jacobean buildings, has been preserved so that visitors can stand on the
very spot where in 1620 the Pilgrim Fathers set out for America aboard
the Mayflower. The Victorian fish market and National Marine Aquarium
nearby are both worth a visit while you’re in the vicinity. Both Plymouth the bustling port, and Exeter the county seat with it’s flourishing nightlife, have plenty to offer the visitor but for a seaside holiday, look no further than Torbay – the English Riviera – which includes Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, where you can go wreck fishing for conger eels. Further south is Sidmouth in all its Regency splendour and to the north lies Ilfracombe, handy for a day trip to Lundy – the isle of puffins. Surfies flock to the broad sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde Bay whilst inland, the more adventurous make for the wilds of Dartmoor, 365 square mile of the wildest country in Britain with its granite tors, Bronze Age settlements, wild ponies and sparkling rivers. But do remember that here in Hound of the Baskerville territory, the weather can be unpredictable and it’s important to come prepared. On a smaller scale to the north, beautiful Exmoor - Lorna Doone country - offers similar outdoor opportunities for walkers, nature lovers, and pony trekkers. Then when you’ve had enough exercise, what about a cream tea? They’re never hard to find around these parts and for a takeaway farmhouse cider is often available for sale at the farm gate.
