The county of Gloucestershire covers over 1000 square miles in the South
West of England and typifies the rustic image of England 's country folk
with their rosy red cheeks and "oo aar" accents. The name Gloucestershire
comes from the Briton Glouiu meaning bright place - its Roman name was
Glevum Gloucestershire is also the home of one of Britain's prettiest and
most popular regions - the Cotswolds - with its soft stone villages and
stunning views. The Cotswolds are chalk hills that overlook the Severn Vale and many of its views are quite spectacular. Millions of years ago, the Cotswold Hills were the sludge of prehistoric creatures at the bottom of an ancient sea forced up under enormous pressure to form the familiar cotswold heights that rise in soft blue outline and give Gloucestershire its romantic appeal. The county has many small towns and pretty villages constructed and roofed with golden Cotswold stone. The county's main products are cereals, fruit and dairy products. Part of the county goes over what might otherwise be Gloucestershire's border - the River Severn - and on its farthest and wildest edges to the west are the beautiful Wye Valley, Forest of Dean and Bristol Channel. The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley lie on the Welsh border where the main industries are engineering and coal mining. The Forest of Dean was once a royal hunting ground but sadly no royals remain in the forest today. Berkeley Castle, where Edward II was murdered, is just one of Gloucestershire's many attractions. Within the Severn Vale itself is Cheltenham - Britain's best preserved Regency town Other places of interest in Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds include: Tewkesbury Gloucester Stroud Cirencester North Cotswolds villages Northleach, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, The Slaughters, Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh, Snowshill, Broadway (actually in Worcestershire), Hailes, Winchcombe and Chipping Campden South Cotswolds villages of Berkeley, Slimbridge, Painswick, Tetbury, Fairford and Lechlade Amberley Apperley Berkeley Bourton-on-the-Water Bream Bredon Brockworth Chalford Charlton Kings Cheltenham Chipping Campden Chipping Sodbury Churchdown Cinderford Cirencester Dursley Dymock Fairford Forthampton Gloucester Hawling Kemble Lechlade-on-Thames Lydney Minchinhampton Moreton-in-Marsh Nailsworth Newent Newnham Northleach Painswick Quenington Somerford Keynes Staunton Stonehouse Stow-on-the-Wold Stroud Tetbury Tewkesbury Toddington Woodchester Wotton-under-Edge
