Hertfordshire is the first county you come to as you head north out of
London on the A1. The M25 London orbital, which runs along the bottom
edge of the county, will take you south west into Berkshire or east into
Essex. Hertfordshire’s densely populated southern commuter belt is
contrasts with rolling farmland to the north. Hertfordshire's top tourist attraction is Hatfield House in Hatfield, just 25 miles north of London. It’s one of the best examples of a Jacobean country house and garden in England and has strong associations with Elizabeth the first. She spent much of her childhood here in the Tudor wing of what was once Hatfield Palace. Hertfordshire's main urban center is St Albans, known to the Romans as Verulamium. It was a very significant trading post for them and the Verulamium Museum has a stunning collection of Roman artefacts, including some exquisite mosaics. St. Albans gets its name from a Roman citizen called Albanus who was beheaded for sheltering a priest in 209 A.D., becoming England’s first Christian martyr. St. Albans Cathedral now stands on the site of his martyrdom.
