Greater Manchester was created in 1974 from the parts of Lancashire and
Cheshire closest to the city of Manchester. Apart from Manchester the
area covers the old Lancashire towns of Oldham, Bury and Bolton, Wigan,
Rochdale, the city of Salford and the former Cheshire towns of Stockport
and Altrincham. Greater Manchester covers about 500 square miles and has
a population of over 2.5 million. In common with it's traditions the area
is highly industrialised. As Greater Manchester is an artificially created county the residents of the outlying towns are more likely to think of themselves as being from either Lancashire or Cheshire. 'Mancs' or 'mancunians' come only from the city of Manchester or nearby Salford. Altrincham
