In the 9th Century, Danish invaders divided Yorkshire into the North,
West and East Ridings. In 1974 these ancient administrative divisions
became North, South and West Yorkshire, and Humberside (now renamed East
Yorkshire). Together they cover over 5000 square miles, North Yorkshire
being by far the largest division. With its craggy fells and moor clad
Dales to north, lush green pastures to the south, and a dramatic
coastline, North Yorkshire offers some of the most varied and
dramatically beautiful countryside in England. Both the Yorkshire Dales
and the North York Moors National Parks have a network of superb walking
tracks including long distance options like the 100 mile Cleveland Way
which takes you across the moors right into the heart of Bronte country.
North Yorkshire is rich in historical treasures including Rievaulx and
Fountains Abbeys, Castle Howard ( the setting for Evelyn Waugh’s
“Brideshead Revisited”) and Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters. The
jewel in the crown is the medieval city of York, with its cobbled streets
and magnificent gothic Minster where Britain’s largest collection of
medieval stained glass can be seen. The North Yorkshire coast can be as
rugged and dramatic as the wild moorland and dark sprawling fells. The
towering cliffs of Flamborough Head and Bempton, accessible via the
Heritage Coast footpath, offer protection to a hundred thousand nesting
seabirds. Scarborough a few miles further up the coast, with its broad
sandy beaches and ornate pleasure gardens, is North Yorkshire’s biggest
traditional seaside resort and lays claim to being Britain’s oldest.
Further north still, the picturesque little fishing haven at Robin Hood’s
Bay is a fossil hounds paradise, and Whitby where Captain James Cook’s
“Endeavour” was built, is the atmospheric setting for Count Dracula’s
landfall and should definitely appear on any modern vampire hunter’s
itinerary.
